In a recent study made by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), it was found out that the state of Michigan was one of the states having high incidence of pharmaceutical abuse among teens. In Michigan's Bureau of Justice Statistics, results from studies made by the University of Michigan showed drug and alcohol use among high school and college students. The study revealed a high percentage in students who used alcohol and marijuana within the previous year.

Studies done in 2006 reported 66.5 percent of high school seniors used alcohol in the previous year, 31.5 percent used marijuana, and 5.7 percent used cocaine. Other substances included in the study were opiates, sedatives, stimulants, hallucinogens, and inhalants.

In 2005, studies reported 44.8 percent of high school seniors were marijuana users, 8 percent were cocaine users, and 1.5 percent were heroin users. Results in studies made during 1992 to 2005 showed an increase among marijuana users. The study revealed that among marijuana users, 12 to 20 percent were high school seniors, 8 to 15 percent were in 10th grade, and 4 to 7 percent were in eighth grade. The number of high school students using marijuana within the last month had reached its highest rate at 37 percent in 1978 and its lowest at 12 percent in 1992.

In 2005, studies manifested that 17.1 percent of drug users among college students used marijuana for the past 30 days while 1.8 percent used cocaine. For the past years, the number of college students using cocaine have changed from 2.9 percent in 1996 to 5.7 percent in 2005. The results show that majority of students like marijuana more than cocaine, but cocaine addiction is still an emerging problem.
